For many people it's pretty easy to recognize the pastor in this week's FAITH IN FOCUS.

It's Jackson's Mayor - Tony Yarber.

Despite the new role in the city, almost every Sunday he still preaches at Relevant Empowerment Church.

Though, politically, his rolodex is growing - this week he's emphasizing the importance of the people who are closest to us - husband and wife.

...and God's grace, perhaps, is something husbands and wives need to channel frequently.

"Say, for instance, my husband drives me crazy because he won't put the cup in the dishwasher that's right next to the sink," church member Vera Finley said.

"And it won't blow up and be a big deal because you'll know that there are other married couples who have the same issue," Finley said.

"Actually in a couple days it will be seven years. Yeah, our anniversary's coming up," Willis Finley said.

...but meeting with other church couples helps.

"Originally it came up as just something for married people to do outside of church. The church was kind of small and growing so we had married couples over to just have dinner and have some downtime," Vera Finley said.

"Marriage is work," Pastor Yarber said.

"You know, when that wedding is over and everyone's gone home. And everyone's returned their dresses or tuxedos - there has to be a conscious, collective effort in that house to make that marriage work," Pastor Yarber said.

Pastor Yarber says - based on what's in the Bible - God is always looking for representations of who he is on earth. That means that he looks for representations of his relationship with the church - Jesus Christ being the head of it with the church being his bride.

And marriage - for Pastor Yarber - is also a balancing act. He says he has to make sure his political life does not consume him.

"But I think ultimately, just being able to understand where my real core is - where my real center is. And my real center is my family. My real center is my church family. Those are the things that make everything else happen as successfully as they do in my life," Pastor Yarber said.

Relevant Empowerment Church also offers pre-marital counciling for couples. It's six sessions long imploring people who go through it to have ten specific conversations before taking the leap.
