ROANOKE (WSLS) - Roanoke City Police are investigating the incident surrounding the death of a 2-year-old girl.

A vigil was held near the girl's home Monday night.

According to a news release from police, officers were called to the 1500 block of Kenwood Boulevard SE at 4:27 p.m. Sunday for an unresponsive child.

Roanoke Fire-EMS arrived first and found the child in a car seat in a vehicle parked in the driveway of a home.

They pronounced her dead at the scene.

Investigators say it appears the child was left in the van accidentally by a parent for an extended period of time.

The Medical Examiner's Office is conducting an autopsy.

The Roanoke Commonwealth Attorney's Office has been contacted to determine if criminal charges will be filed.
