
Byron Brown is an award-winning journalist with over 30 years of experience in television news. Byron has been a member of the WJTV 12 News team since January of 2003. He is the evening anchor at 5:00, 6:00, 9:00 and 10:00.
Byron has been in Jackson for over 20 years, coming to WJTV 12 News from our sister station WFLA in Tampa, where he served as weekend anchor. Byron was also a weekday morning and midday anchor at WOIO/WUAB in Cleveland, Ohio, a weekend morning anchor at KCNC in Denver, Colorado and a weekend anchor at WCIV in Charleston, South Carolina.
Byron has covered many big stories over the years from politics to natural disasters, water crisis and crime. In 2019 he moderated four statewide debates. Byron also hosts a weekly political show, Mississippi Insight. Byron has covered numerous breaking news events from across the country and was working in Tampa, Florida, in 2000 during the controversial Presidential election. In addition, Byron has also covered numerous Presidential candidates on their campaign visits.
Byron is very active in the community serving as Honorary Chair for the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi. He has worked many years with JDRF and had been a long time Community Advisory Board member for Big Brothers Big Sisters.
He has received many awards from community organizations and the Mississippi Associated Press along with an Emmy nomination.
Byron is a graduate of Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Alabama with a degree in Telecommunications and a minor in Business. Byron attended school on a soccer scholarship. He is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, and he also enjoys mentoring emerging journalists. Byron is from Yellow Springs, Ohio and is married with two children.
