Pat Smith shares story of losing mother to breast cancer at Shop Pink event

PEARL, Miss. (WJTV) — An event to bring awareness to Breast Cancer was held at the Outlets of Mississippi Thursday.

WJTV’s Melanie Christopher got the chance to emcee the Shop Pink event. Pat Smith was also the special guest at the luncheon and fashion show.

Smith, the wife of football great Emmitt Smith, shared her story of losing her mother to the disease.

She was 17 years old when she had to deal with that tough loss. Her first book, Second Chances, is her story of finding healing for her pain.

St. Dominic Hospital hosted the event. Shop Pink is also a WJTV Caring for Mississippi Event.

Of cancer Smith says, “It is not only affects that person….it affects the family.”

Other speakers at the event included Sister Dorothea of St. Dominic’s Health Services Foundation and Vaniessa Cousin, a songwriter and vocalist who is a three-time breast cancer survivor.  Cousin served as the 2015 “Shop Pink Woman of the Year.”

The 2016 “Shop Pink Woman of the Year” is Aimee Burrow.  She is Director of Volunteer Services at St. Dominic’s, where she first starting working as a nurse in 1987.

WJTV’s Melanie Christopher says that the messages that each woman delivered resonated with the audience.
