JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – By the end of this week, a simple trip to your local Walmart could also be your path to being vaccinated for the Coronavirus. 31 store pharmacies have been announced through the department of health.
This location behind me is key for those living in the south and central parts of Jackson, the Walmart along Greenway Dr. right off Highway 18 and I-20 is on the list for having its pharmacists giving patients their shots but to get in the system you’ll need to schedule online.
From Jackson to Madison, Canton, Kosciusko, Yazoo City, Greenville, and down to Brookhaven, McComb, Hattiesburg, Petal, or Laurel, about 200 people per-week can get their first doses.
“The locations were chosen in a matter to try to help balance out some of the gaps,” State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs told us. “Whether It’s because of rural or underserved so hopefully that will help fill some of that gap.”
To qualify you must log onto Walmart.com/CovidVaccine and type in your address then search through zip codes to see what location closest to you has available doses.
“We know we’re on the downside with some cases decreasing and potentially deaths decreasing over time,” State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers added. “We want to continue that. Honestly between that and the vaccination is really how we’re going to get things back to normal.”
While Mississippi’s current COVID-19 drive-thru sites and more than 50 private sector partners have injected the Coronavirus Vaccine in over 330,000 arms. Noticing gaps still show up with minorities getting less than 20% of available doses vs. 70% of whites. Even though blacks make up about 40% of cases.
“The access issue is huge, and we have selected partners that are more efficient,” Dr. Dobbs explained. “We’ve also been working to reduce barriers because we know sometimes the internet is a barrier and even some of our community partners are using mobile clinics. Some of our partners go to black churches and where folks feel comfortable.”
For those without quality internet, you can still call the COVID-19 vaccine hotline at 877-978-6453 to make an appointment at a state site. If you’re 75 or older press one and they’ll transfer you to a new line to speed up the process.
For Walmart’s like here off Greenway Dr. and Highway 18, the Jatran Bus system also stops here in case you can’t drive. Remember to still qualify you must be 65 or older or have pre-existing conditions.
