2 students injured in stabbing on school bus; 1 student, parent in custody


PORT GIBSON, Miss. (WJTV) — A female student and her father are in custody after a school bus stabbing in Claiborne County.

Conservator of Claiborne County School District Earl Watkins said several high school students were involved in the incident. Watkins said the stabbing happened sometime after 6:45 a.m.

Law enforcement officers tell us that a sister and brother were fighting with another student that they claim they were being harassed. Sheriff Frank Davis said the girl allegedly stabbed another student with a sharp object. Her brother was also stabbed.

Sheriff’s deputies said her father came to the bus stop at some point with a gun. Her dad, 37-year-old George Smith Jr. is charged with a misdemeanor. His daughter was taken to Youth Court in Vicksburg where a judge will determine how they should move forward with the case.

Her brother was released from the hospital, the other student is still at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The sheriff said the sharp object may have hit his lung.

The investigation is ongoing.
