JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – We are just one day away from ringing in the New Year.
It happens to be one of the most dangerous times to be out on the roadways because of drunk drivers. Some local organizations are offering those celebrating a “safe ride home.”
“The worst decision you can make after having drunk alcohol is to get behind the wheel,” Jim Pollard, the Public Affairs Manager for AMR, said.
Friends don’t let friends drive drunk- that’s the motto for this year’s “Safe Ride Home” program. AMR will be offering free rides to people around the metro area for New Year’s Eve.
This program means so much to Denise Marsters, Founder and CEO of The McCoy House For Sober Living. “One of my best friends, she never drank and drove. Anytime she went out for a party she would call a taxi. About 2 weeks after I left Ireland I got a phone call to say she had called a taxi one night. A drunk driver hit the taxi and she was killed.”
Meyers says ladies who have completed a 90-day program at the McCoy House, and other volunteers, will be taking calls from people who need a ride on New Year’s Eve.
AMR gave 250 people rides last year. This year they will have six vans that can carry up to 15 people each.
“You may be ok from a legal stand point and may be under the .08 level, that does not mean by any means that you’re not impaired,” Mike Cashion, the Executive Director of Mississippi Hospitality and Restaurant Association, said.
Party goers can call for a “safe ride home” between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.
The vans will only take you home and not to another party, restaurant or bar.
If you need a safe ride home on New Year’s Eve you can call (601) 368 – 2323.
