HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Tennessee Titans made Southern Miss defensive back Kalan Reed the final player chosen in the 2016 National Football League Draft Saturday afternoon.

Reed, who hails from Birmingham, Ala., was the 253rd overall and final pick of the seventh round. With teammate and wide receiver Mike Thomas going in the sixth round to the Los Angeles Rams, it marked the first time a pair of Golden Eagles were taken in the NFL Draft since both Shawn Nelson (Buffalo) and Gerald McRath (Tennessee) each went in the fourth round of the 2009 draft. McRath also marked the most recent Titan chosen by that organization prior to Reed’s pick.

The Golden Eagle defensive back earned first-team All-Conference USA honors and earned selection in this past January’s NFLPA Collegiate Bowl following his senior campaign as he started in all 14 games and has registered 56 tackles (50 solo), which was fourth-best on the team. He added four tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles, along with a single-season school record 19 pass breakup and four interceptions.

One of his interceptions went for 76 yards and a touchdown against Austin Peay, while another was his third career pick for a score at Marshall. Perhaps his most exciting interception came at Charlotte when he swiped a 49er pass one-handed that was an ESPN Top 10 play of the day. His last career pick came against WKU starter Brandon Doughty in the C-USA championship game, which he returned 40 yards. In addition, he thwarted a late Texas State drive to help the Golden Eagles capture a 56-50 victory with a tackle at the goal line on fourth down.

In his four-year Golden Eagle career, Red played in 48 games and tallied 152 tackles (113 solos) with 8.5 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, 35 pass breakups, four fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles.
