BRANDON, Miss. (WJTV) — Genna Benna’s in downtown Brandon was packed with Gardner Minshew’s family, friends, and teammates who had plenty of reason to celebrate.
Minshew couldn’t stop smiling moments after getting “the call” from the Jacksonville Jaguars, who selected him with the fifth pick in the sixth round of the NFL Draft.
The former Brandon Bulldog tallied 11,222 career passing yards and 105 total touchdowns in high school. He also maintained a 4.0 GPA. Despite all that, the big time D1 offers didn’t come pouring in.
It all worked out for Minshew, who eventually teamed up with Mike Leach to become an overnight sensation at Washington State. He was named the Pac 12 Offensive Player of the Year after passing for 4,779 yards (second in the country), and 38 touchdowns (fourth in the country) last season.
