STARKVILLE, Miss. (WJTV) – In a season where not much has gone right for Mississippi State, the Bulldogs finally have a win to bark about.
They ran for a season-high 365 yards, led by their quarterback Nick Fitzgerald with 182, to upset No. 4 Texas A&M 35-28. He scored four total touchdowns while Aeris Williams added in 140 yards and a score on the ground.
MSU wasted no time getting out to a lead, as Fitzgerald broke free for a 74-yard touchdown run on the first drive to make it 7-0. Williams added in a short score of his own later in the quarter to make it a two-touchdown lead.
Even after the Aggies responded with a touchdown from Trevor Knight, the Bulldogs had more big plays to counter. Fitzgerald found Fred Ross for a 60-yard touchdown and then another from eight yards out to give Mississippi State a 28-7 lead.
Christian Kirk got A&M back in the game, returning a kick 93 yards for a touchdown before halftime and then catching a 54-yard score in the third quarter to make it 28-21.
But Fitzgerald would respond with 3:08 left in the fourth quarter, carrying tacklers on his way into the end zone to give the Bulldogs a late two-touchdown lead.
The Aggies would score again, but it would end up being a little too late. This is the first victory for Mississippi State against a ranked opponent this season and brings MSU to a 4-5 overall record with a 2-3 mark in the SEC.
