MADISON COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is investigating its first homicide of the new year.

The Madison County coroner identified the victim as Omario Caldwell.

Family and friends said the victim is transgender and goes by Mesha Caldwell.

“She was always smiling,” said Evonne Kaho, a family friend. “Everyone loved her. No one could say anything bad about her.”

“There is nothing on earth that can help me understand why anyone on earth would take another person’s life,” said Johnny Jenkins, the victim’s friend.

According to Heath Hall of the sheriff’s department, deputies were called to Heindl Road off of Yazoo City Road around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

When they arrived on the scene, they found a body on the road. Hall said the victim had been shot.
