Cruise ship sends mayday, 1,300 evacuated amid high seas

A cruise ship in Norway lost engine power amid strong winds and high seas on Saturday, resulting in air-evacuation of every passenger onboard.

The AP reports that passengers were “terrified,” as they were winched offboard by helicaopter, one-by-one.

The maritime rescue service said the Viking Sky carried around 1,300 passengers and crew, when ship operators had to send out a mayday signal, as it had been drifting towards land.

Eight of the evacuated passengers injured.
