Deadly Rankin County shooting leads to shootout and high speed chase


Rankin County, Miss – Officials in Rankin County tell us a man is accused of shooting his mother-in-law before leading authorities on a chase into another county.

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey tells us the suspect in the deadly shooting of 44-year-old, Cassaundra Ann Irwin is Robert M. Busby, 28.

We’re told the victim is Busby’s mother-in-law. Witnesses in the area say Busby came out of the home shooting. We’re told shots were fired at a woman neighbors say is his wife. Outside, were three children as well.

“That’s what I understand that his wife and kids left the scene and that’s my understanding it was possibly his (Busby’s) intention was to pursue them and cause harm to them,” says Sheriff Bailey says the woman and three children left the scene. They’re now safe.

Authorities were called to a home on Carol Avenue in Florence, Monday evening around 6:15.

From there, we’re told the suspect lead authorities on a high speed chase into Simpson County.

Sheriff Bailey says the suspect fired shots at law enforcement officers when they caught up with him. We’re told those officers did fire back.

No authorities were injured when those shots were fired, but the suspect was hit. Busby was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment.

The 28-year-old is facing murder, four counts of Attempted Aggravated Assault on the wife and children, two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Felony Fleeing, Domestic Violence and Felony Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Sheriff Bailey is thanking the agencies and officers involved with the arrest of Busby, who was called a serious threat to the public.
