JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death of an inmate who was found dead in a Jackson Police Department holding cell.

Sunday morning, Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance and Mayor Tony Yarber held a news conference on the front steps of JPD headquarters.

Vance says, 29-year-old Jamal Mallard of Jackson was found dead around 6:00 Sunday morning. Mallard was found on the floor of a cell.

Mallard was arrested Saturday night for allegedly stealing a lawnmower.

Police found Mallard walking along Courtview Street pushing the lawnmower. We’re told the 29-year-old ran from police.

Mallard was booked around 3:45 Sunday morning and found dead nearly two hours later. According to the Hinds County coroner, Mallard had no signs of trauma or injuries. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

MBI will now handle the investigation.
