Durant community mourning loss of 2 nuns

DURANT, Miss. (WJTV) — The murders of two nuns is still affecting the Town of Durant where they lived.

Sisters Margaret Held and Paula Merrill were killed Thursday.

“They were still our friends and our nurse because they treated us when we were sick both of us so to find out somebody had killed them it really did a job on me,” said Robert Patterson, a neighbor.

Crime tape remains around Merrill and Held’s home that is located on Castilian Springs Road.

“Most everybody down here knows everybody if you don’t know the name then you know the family.”

That’s why it came as a shock to Harry Sanders when he heard who was accused of committing the crime.

“I’ve known him for a long time he used to sit up under a tree when I would hang out with my friends working at the fish factory,” said Harry Sanders.

He told WJTV he isn’t related to Rodney Sanders, the man arrested in the murder investigation. However, he said he remembers seeing him around.

“I didn’t know he was going to do all of this,” he said.

The two women worked at Lexington Medical Clinic. The facility is scheduled to reopen on September 5.
