HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) — The family of a man who passed away at the Hinds County Detention Center is still waiting for answers about how he died.

On Friday, the sheriff’s department said the inmate was found unresponsive in his cell around 7:30 a.m.

We spoke to the family who identified him as Sammie Davis, Jr.

The department said no foul play is suspected in his death, but the family is upset about how it’s been handled so far.

“When he died, they left a card on his mother’s door, and told his neighbor that he passed away,” Markicia Horton said, who is Davis’ niece. “Which we feel is very infuriating to us.”

The sheriff’s department said they are still waiting on an autopsy report. WJTV will continue to follow this story as more details become available.
