UPDATE: 12/12/2019 6:07 p.m.
ISSAQUENA COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – The Issaquena County Correctional Facility will remain open, for now.
The sheriff’s office and the board of supervisors came to an agreement on Thursday about the prison in Mayersville
“They’re going over past finances and stuff like that, to see is there any money that might’ve been placed somewhere that they could get some more money to try to supplement the money that they got coming in,” said Chief Deputy Willie Peterson.
The facility is the main supplier of jobs in Issaquena County.
“I can tell you right now I’m just happy as I can be because I’m more optimistic today that I’ve been in a while, that I’m sure we’ll be able to keep the facility here,” said Peterson.
Deputy Peterson said they will also reach out to the commissioner to see if the Mississippi Department of Corrections will be able to provide any monetary assistance.
