JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Hundreds of food boxes were given away to senior citizens in Jackson.
That program helps seniors living in Mississippi’s Capital City.
Six hundred boxes of food were handed out to seniors Monday morning.
“Vegetables, meats, fruit, juice and different things for the nourishment of our bodies,” said Annie Gates, a participant.
Gates says she’s been coming to the Jackson Revival Center to get food for the past three years.
With the food she gets here, she says she can use her money from her Social Security check to get other household goods.
“That’s money I can use for that, instead of trying to get a little something to eat,” said Gates.
“It helps me to get items that I’m not able to buy during the month because of my income,” said Ms. Carr, a participant.
A part of the AmeriCorps Program is to help seniors who don’t have enough food to get them through the month.
“We don’t have to worry about our seniors out here on the streets begging for food, when they can come to an outreach center as this and get the food that they need,” said Rolanda Alexander, the program manager.
Ms. Carr says after paying her monthly bills, she simply does not have enough money to go grocery shopping.
“A lot of people, when they pay their bills and stuff, they really don’t have any income left basically for food; if they don’t have children or anybody to help them.” Ms. Carr
AmeriCorps works with a number of non-profits throughout the city, like the Jackson Revival Center.
Lekenrick Brackett, a student at Hinds Community College, volunteers at the center every month to help seniors with their boxes.
“It gives me joy, to see a smile on their face. Because, you know, no one is helping them. It gives me joy because they need someone to help them,” said Brackett
The boxes are only distributed to those enrolled in the Jackson Revival Food Outreach or the City of Jackson’s Senior Services Program.
