JACKSON, Miss (WJTV) – The Jackson Police Department revealed a new fleet of police cruisers.
The new squad cars have a white base with dark blue letters. At the rear of the vehicle there is an orange stripe.
Jackson’s mayor Choke Lumumba said, “The goal that we are setting out for is a goal to work towards the protection of our citizens.”
“Over the last few years, [JPD] have not purchased new vehicles for our officers, Lumumba said. ” We have had officers — who have been riding that did not have adequate air conditioning -did not demonstrate the safest conditions to ride in.”
Forty-six new vehicles were purchased. 45 will be spit among the four police precincts and one of the cars will go to the JPD training academy.
According to the Chief of Police James Davis, each car cost $29,000 which adds up to over 1.3 Million dollars.
“What you will see, when you see these cars rolling through the community,” Chief Davis said. “I encourage you to flag that car down.”
He added, “It’s a new look and a new commitment.”
