Laurel Smothers Wayne Co. in 5A State Championship Victory

WHLT — On Friday night Laurel claimed its first state championship in school history with a 71-47 win over Wayne Co. in the 5A title game. The War Eagles held a 14-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter, but they left the door wide open for the opposition by going just 7-18 from the free throw line in the second period. The Golden Tornadoes then stormed back into the game on the strength of a 45-8 run from the second to the third quarters. Leading the charge with a game-high 23 points was Dontario Drummond, one of four Laurel players in double figures compared to only one for Wayne Co. The War Eagles last won the state crown in 2011.
