Local job fair gives mom hope

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – One mom heard an opportunity on the radio Wednesday morning that she just couldn’t pass up.

That mom made a stop at the Trademart hoping to find a new job.

“For a single mother with four kids, I feel like this is very helpful. I’m just glad they’re having this for the community.”

Shena Mallet is just one of many job seekers who came out to the Employment Expo at the Trademart.

Shena works as a waitress and she’s in school. She says it’s been tough for her and her family. So she’s looking for a second job.

“Waitress, we only make $2.13. We make our money off our tips and that’s not enough with four kids. I’m trying to further my education. I just need a steady, second job that’s more secure,” said Mallet.

At least 90 employers and organizations were there looking to recruit, some were even hiring on the spot.

The Department of Employment Security hosted the event. They say Mississippi’s economy is doing well.

Unemployment rates are down from 7.0 percent in January to 6.2 percent in February.

“Businesses that are thriving, that are going on right now, are needing those employees to fit those positions.”

And Shena hopes she’s the perfect fit for one of those positions.

Shena says she was nervous at first because she wasn’t prepared for the job fair.

“It would be discouraging that I had my child with me. They were like ‘no, I’m glad you came in unexpectedly’. That lets me know you want it, Let’s me know you need it,” said Mallet.

The Department of Employment Security will be holding another job fair on Thursday, March 31,2016, at the Jackson Medical Mall.

It will focus on people with disabilities.
