Bill Bellamy knows a thing or two about the entertainment business. The nationally known actor got his start on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam in the early 90s.
His days as a standup comedian led to the big screen, where he landed roles on movies like “The Brothers,” “How to be a Player,” and “Any Given Sunday.“
This week, Bellamy is in Jackson for The Pop Up Comedy Series. It’s an event where well-known entertainers show up to smaller venues, in cities where people might not expect to see them.
“We’re really inspired by a grassroots comedy, and we gave it a theme which is ladies night out,“ Bellamy said. “We wanted to celebrate the ladies. It’s two things at one time,”
Bellamy says it can be easy for people to make it in his busy, especially with the influence of the internet. During our sit down, Bellamy told us he thinks upcoming actors and comedians should take advantage of social media.
“I’ve seen so many people blow up just being funny or really, or singing really well. So post your stuff.”
Bellamy also has a message for anyone looking to pursue a career in entertainment who may not be discouraged.
“For the talent that’s out there today that’s wondering how you’re going to make it, you’re going to make it by action. You’re going to make it by making a move,” Bellamy said.
The star says a little tenacity and practice can take you far.
“Whether it’s going to the studio and putting in the time to put down the track, whether it’s you writing jokes and having your boys at listen. If you’re a singer or dancer. Just do it. If it can happen for me, it can happen for you.”
The Stand-up Comedian is set to hit the stage Friday, March 29, through Sunday, March 31, at Johnny T’s Bistro & Blues. Tickets for the show are $25.
