FORT JACKSON, New Orleans (WJTV) - The United States Coast Guard has dispatched a fleet of response vessels in search of a 27-year-old man who was aboard a ship that sank near Fort Jackson, Louisiana at sunrise Saturday.
Officials say that watch standers at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a call for help at 5:41 a.m.
The vessel with three people aboard was “taking on water, near mile marker 20 on the Mississippi River,” a press release said.
The boat sank and two of the three people aboard were able to swim to shore, but the 27-year-old man did not.
His name is not yet known. His shipmates say he was last seen wearing a camouflage jacket.
Parties and vessels involved in the search are an MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans, 45-Foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Venice, Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and Coast Guard Cutter Sailfish.
