Canton Alderwoman and former police chief Vickie McNeil and at least four others were indicted on charges of voter fraud in Madison County back in December. The allegations stem from 2017 elections.

Many appeared at the Circuit Court of Canton Monday for a status hearing.

McNeil is accused of assisting two voters with filing absentee ballots when she was a candidate for re-election. School board member Courtney Rainy is also charged. She faces 12 counts of voter fraud, two counts of conspiracy and is charges with intimidating a witness.

Rainey was in court along with her attorney. He said she will continue fighting charges against her.

Carlos Tanner said, “It’s on public file. Based on what we’ve been given, a ham sandwich not withstanding. Based on what we’ve been given I’m not sure why they have even indicted her. We asked the court for more. To give us stuff we can use so we can defend her.”

Voter fraud carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Officials say each charged have until Friday to enter a plea.
