Chicago police are investigating a possible hate crime against actor-singer Jussie Smollet.
Smollet, who plays a character on the hit show ‘Empire’, told police he was assaulted early Tuesday morning.
“This is the kind of song that makes a man love a man, man love a man…..”
Smollet plays a gay character on the show and is gay in real life. Police say Smollett told them his attackers yelled racial and homophobic slurs at him. He was hit, had an unknown substance poured on him and according to Smollett, a rope was placed around his neck.
Lee Daniels, Co-Creator & Director of “Empire” is incensed.
“You didn’t deserve nor anybody deserves to have a noose put around your neck, to have bleach thrown on you, to be called die ft, na or whatever they said to you.”
Police released pictures of two persons of interest wanted for questioning because they were in the area at the time of the incident. So far, police haven’t found any images of the alleged assault. But, they found video showing Smollett entering the building with what appeared to be a rope around his neck.
He has received a lot of support from people on social media including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Presidential hopeful Kamala Harris.
Smollett and his music manager told police they were talking to each other on the phone when the alleged attack happened. A spokesman says police haven’t independently confirmed that yet.
