February SNAP benefits to be released early due to partial government shutdown

Early issuance of benefits to be available by January 20, 2019

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) - The Mississippi Department of Human Services is announcing the early issuance of February SNAP benefits.  Benefits will be available by January 20, 2019.

Benefits issued early are not an extra payment or bonus.  They are intended to cover food purchases for the month of February.  No addition benefits will be issued to those who choose to redeem benefits on the early issuance date.

Households who have submitted recertification applications that have not been processed or approved by January 15th are not eligible to receive early issued benefits.  In addition to that, there are limited funds that will be available after January 20th.

The Department of Human Services will continue to process applications as they are submitted.   SNAP benefits will be issued based on federal funds that are available.

The agency is reminding citizens to be prepared for the possibility that benefits are not available for several months due to the shutdown.  It also recommends purchasing non-perishable foods to sustain needs through the period of uncertainty.

Once SNAP benefits are issued, they are accessible for up to 365 days.
