A bill banning abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat advanced at the state capitol today.

SB 2116, would provide exemptions for cases of medical emergencies. Sponsors include Senators Angela Hill, R-Picayune and Chris Caughman, R-Mendenhall.

Lt. Governor Tate Reeves released this statement.

“I thank Senators Hill and Caughman for introducing legislation to stop the barbaric practice of ending life in the womb even though a heartbeat is plainly detected,” Lt. Gov. Reeves said. “I am committed to making Mississippi the safest place in America for an unborn child.”
