For most school children, Summer is close enough to taste. Parents have to find a way to keep their kids occupied and learning for the next few months. The Jackson Hinds Library system is great place to start.
Doing nothing has its advantages, you can catch up on your sleep, maybe catch up on your shows, but after a few days most of us crave something to do and some place to go.
During the month of May you can sign up for the Summer Reading Program at any branch in the Jackson Hinds Library System.
Patty Furr is the Executive Director.
She spells it out like this, “When a child stops reading over the Summer, they can lose 1.5 to 3 months of reading instruction.”
This year’s Theme is a Universe of Stories. More than 300 programs will be spread across our local libraries from June 3 through July 11. From art projects for toddlers, to adult coloring classes, something is bound to pique your interest. Kids can select what they want to read, and with a Fine Free kids card, not be in a rush to return it.
Patty explains, “They can check out 2 books (and) keep them as long as 6 weeks.”
As if that deal isn’t sweet enough, Patty adds, “I have to tell you, those people who read this Summer will be eligible to win $37,000 in coupons and prizes.”
Those will be handed out across each local branch at the Reading Celebration, July 11.
Patty concludes, “You’re going to miss out if you don’t come by the library this Summer, because we have great programs with interesting speakers. You don’t have to take a vacation. Stay at home and take a staycation with us this year.
You can peruse all the programs at jhlibrary.org
Every participant in the Summer Reading program will receive a treat bag filled with coupons to local restaurants and other retailers.
