It’s that time of the year! Time for packages and deliveries. And with that come the ‘porch pirates’ looking to steal right from a person’s front door.

There’s going to be billions of package is being mailed out, but Dough Kyle with the U.S. Postal Service says there are things you can do to make sure yours is not stolen.

“The best way to approach this is to stay ahead of your package and have a plan.”

A plan to protect deliveries and fend off attempted thefts.

“We consider the holiday mailing to begin the day after Thanksgiving and go through New Year’s day. This year we’re looking for 900 million packages and about 15 billion letters.”

Experts say you have to keep in mind there are some people who specifically look forward to this time of the year. It’s an opportunity to steal letters or packages they believe are holding something of value

Sheriff Victor Mason, “Have a neighbor watch out for the FedEx man, or the UPS man and even if you’re not at home have them deliver the package to your neighbor’s house because there will likely be a lot of thefts.”

It’s also a good idea to take advantage of tracking options. Tracking systems will let you know when the package is expected to arrive. You can get everything from text and email updates and even leave instructions for the carrier as far as where to leave the package or letter.

“Watch your neighborhood for anything that is unusual. If you see someone following a carrier, whether it is ours or any of the other ones; if you see something say something because prevention is one of the best ways to keep it from happening.”
