Local Jewish organization donates food and time on Christmas Day

JACKSON, Miss.(WJTV) – Dozens of people in Jackson received Christmas lunch thanks to Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson.

For over 20 years now the congregation has been serving Christmas lunch at the Jackson Stewpot.

Due to the organization’s Jewish faith, they don’t celebrate Christmas. However they find it as the perfect time to put a smile on people’s faces.

“Even though we’re not celebrating with our families, we want to make it a really special day for the people who do want to celebrate, and it’s a wonderful way for us to be a part of the community,” said Rachel Glazer with Beth Israel Congregation.

One young member of the organization explained this is her first time volunteering at the Jackson Stewpot, and it won’t be her last.

“Well I’m so excited to like give love to everyone and get to meet a lot of people,” Lucero Adame said.

As folks from the community gathered to get food, they were greeted with smiles and they received gifts like hygiene products, socks and snacks.

“It means a whole lot because… I don’t get along with my family, but Stewpot is my family and I’m glad to come here every day. Today’s a special day,” said Glenda Collier with a smile on her face.

Stewpot says every Christmas it serves around 100 people and it’s always looking for volunteers.
