JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Metrocenter Mall in Jackson in now owned by the State of Mississippi, according to court documents.
“We really put our hearts into it. I really wish things would have been different,” said Katherine Page, former public relations director for the Metrocenter Mall.
In 2020, the shopping center was purchased by Emily Sanders, who brought a promise of exciting things to come, but that in itself uncovered a scandal.
“I’ve received a lot of flack on social media,” said Parker.
Sanders– reportedly convicted of fraud in 2013 and arrested on charges of embezzlement in 2012– brought a slew of questions. The once bustling Metrocenter Mall making a comeback was looking more slim.
Recent documents state the Sanders owes more than $99,000 in taxes amid allegations that she failed to pay former employees earlier this year.
“Now, it’s kind of on a hold,” said Dr. William Grigsby, former Senior Vice President for Metrocenter Mall.
Sanders can reclaim ownership of the Metrocenter Mall. That’s if she is able to make the repayments she owes within a two-year period, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.
WJTV 12 News has reached out to Sanders. As of Friday afternoon, she has commented.
