No more using tanning beds for children 18 and under, Senators vote

Senators voted to pass Senate Bill 2847

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) - Ages 18 and younger would be banned from using tanning beds in Mississippi under a measure forward in the state Legislature.

On Wednesday Senators voted 34-16 to pass Senate Bill 2847.

At the moment children in Mississippi may use the tanning bed with parental permission.

Anti-cancer advocates say the bed contributes to skin cancer and children should not be allowed to use them.

The National Conference of State Legislatures says the District of Columbia and 17 states have enacted such bans.

Sponsors may water down the outright ban to allow older teens to use tanning beds.

Some people are saying the state should not make decisions for parents nor hurt small businesses.
