Officer confirms a shooting inside of Merit Health Central

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Jackson Police Department reported a shooting at Merit Health Central.

According to Chief James Davis, one shot was fired inside the hospital.

Workers said they were on lockdown before officers cleared the scene.

Jana L. Fuss, Director of Marketing for Merit Health Central, left the following statement:

One of our patients discharged a gun this afternoon after waking up in a confused state. No one was injured. Hospital Security and Jackson Police responded timely and the patient surrendered the gun without further incident. We appreciate the quick action of our staff and responsiveness of our local police officers.

Major Pete Luke says a patient apparently became confused and pulled a weapon from her personal belongings and fired twice in the hospital room.

Hospital staff and off duty officers working security for the hospital were able to quickly get the situation under control and secured the weapon.

There were no reports of injuries during this incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
