The Pelahatchie Police Department and the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department briefed press, providing more detail about the sequence of events. Watch below for the full briefing.
10:17 a.m. – Reports of shots fired from a home – Pelahatchie P.D. responds
10:30 a.m. – More shots fired from the home. Police request backup.
-Rankin Sheriff’s Department arrives along with a SRT unit. Authorities spend the next hour trying to get the suspect to surrender. Sheriff Bryan Bailey says deputies tried to find other ways to coax the man from the home. At one point, tear gas was used. When the man came to the door of the home, he pointed his weapon at deputies and law enforcement shot the suspect.
Pelhatchie Police Chief Joseph Daughtry says the suspect was defiant and shouting vulgarities at officers. Daughtry says they tried to get the suspect to give up peaceably but when he pointed a gun at officers they were left with no choice but to defend themselves.
Sheriff Bailey says MBI has been called to investigate. It is standard procedure for the agency to assist anytime there is an officer-involved shooting.
The suspect was shot during the course of the standoff. Emergency crews are working on him and he is in transport to a hospital.
WJTV 12’s Gerald Harris brought us this live report from the scene. During the course of the report, a series of loud bangs sounded. We cannot confirm if it was gunfire or flash bangs. Authorities had to subdue one person who could be heard screaming from a driveway across from the scene. The person is reportedly related to the suspect.
Officers have responded to a standoff in the small town of Pelahatchie.
According to sources, a suspect is inside of a house and crews have set up outside the building, including the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, an SRT unit and Pelahatchie police.
