Students raise money to train service dog for fellow student

Local News

Josh Sexton is a fifth grader at Florence Elementary in Florence, Mississippi.  Josh has battled cancer twice and lost his right arm due to the disease.

Today, November 16, 2018, his classmates, along with other students, presented him with a check for $5,451.50.  The students and the Florence community raised money for Paws for a Cause.  The money will more than pay for the training of Josh’s service dog.

Winter, a Belgian Malinois, will be trained by Mr. Bubba Howell, of Petal, Mississippi.  Howell is with the Southern State Canine Trainers, a group that put on a show for the students today.  The students learned how dogs work with law enforcement and how they are trained as service dogs.

Josh says Winter will help him with his balance, especially on his right side and also assist him with walking. The Seth Harris Foundation is handling the arrangements and financial work for Winter’s training.
