JACKSON, Miss.(WJTV) – A Jackson resident is speaking out after she believes an abandoned house is bringing some unwanted guests to her home.

Gloria Johnson says the vacant house next to her home on Jayne Avenue has been empty for about six years.

She explained the lack of up keeping is causing rats to migrate from the abandoned structure to her home. Now she and her 10-year-old granddaughter live in fear.

“My granddaughter, she lives with me, she’s afraid to go in the kitchen to get her something to eat. She said she seen one crawling on the wall.”

Johnson showed WJTV the areas throughout her home where the rats have made it their own. She pointed out holes in the bathroom, kitchen and she even says they’ve chewed through her electrical wiring, which has left her without heat.

“It hurts me because my grand-baby, and we don’t have anywhere to go right now. It’s a menace and a nuisance to us because… of our health.”

Johnson emphasized she’s reached out to the City of Jackson through phone calls and city council meetings to investigate the problem, but Johnson says at this point she’s run out of patience.”

“I’m a worker in the community. I try to help those who in need, and I need help at this time. I can’t afford to pay this fixture that needs to be fixed in my house because of what’s going on next door.”

WJTV reached out to the City of Jackson and they said they’re investigating Johnson’s concerns.
