Autism support group provides help for families

New center in Hattiesburg provides safe space for parents and kids

Families First of Mississippi Hattiesburg center has created a new support group for parents of children on the autism spectrum.

This group is free and open to anyone who is a parent or caregiver of a child with this disorder

Jennifer Culpepper says,”The autism support group we started it for parents or caregivers of children on the autism spectrum. We started over the summer in June was our first meeting and we started it because there was a lack of support for parents with kids with this diagnosis.”

A cheery library and play space can be found in the building along with a staff of community educators who can provide a customized plan of support.

The overall goal of the group is to provide a safe place for families to share their struggles and difficulties to get feedback from other parents going through the same thing.

Culpepper says, “Parents seem like they enjoy talking to each other and it’s important to see that other people are going through the same thing as you.”

The severity of autism varies from child to child and the parents are grateful the center holds events like this to help them learn the best way to care for their child

Culpepper assures that the center wouldn’t stop having the support group and that it will be there for them.
