HATTIESBURG, Miss – A viral picture of Dylann Roof holding the confederate battle flag has sparked controversy around the country, surrounding the flag and what it symbolizes.

Wednesday, Mayor Johnny Dupree ordered that all Mississippi flags be removed from city properties temporarily. Today, we caught up with Mayor Johnny Dupree about removing the flag.

We have removed the state flags to honor the lives of the nine individuals slain in the church shooting in Charleston, SC, their families, and community as they mourn. We are extending the same show of support as they did during our time of distress,” said Mayor Dupree.

Mayor Dupree said this is strictly properties under his leadership and not locally owned businesses.
