Merit Wesley Health promotes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

News

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WHLT) – October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the radiologists at Merit Welsey Health are encouraging women to get their mammograms.

The hospital performs 6,500 mammograms each year.

Director of Imaging Micki Robertson says October is the hospitals busiest month, but women should perform self exams regularly at home.

“We do recommend women at the age of 40 come in for a baseline screening mammogram. Unless they have a family history of breast cancer, then we encourage them to come in at age 35,” Robertson said.

Doctors at Merit Welsey Health also like to point out mammograms are not just about finding abnormalities, they also track how healthy a patient is growing.
