Coast Guard, other agencies respond to vessel fire on Mississippi River

VICKSBURG, Miss. (WJTV) —  The Coast Guard is responding to a vessel fire on the lower Mississippi River near Vicksburg,

Officials said the fire is near mile marker 390. 

Authorities were notified around 8:50 p.m. Wednesday regarding the uninspected towing vessel George King reporting an engine room fire with nine crew members aboard. 

Officials said the crew members got off the George King to the dry cargo barges it was pushing with no reported injuries. 

The towing vessel C. Michael Reeves was able to push the George King and its barges onto the left descending bank of the Mississippi River.

The Coast Guard said a waterway restriction is in place from mile marker 395 to mile marker 380. The queue is nine vessels upbound and three vessels downbound.

The George King has a reported 65,000 gallons of diesel on board.
Other agencies are also assisting the Coast Guard.
