The City of Jackson has $1.5 million to buy new low emission buses.
The Department of Transportation awarded the grant last week. The lead time on the buses is eighteen to twenty-four months which means the buses won’t arrive until 2020.
Mayor Chokwe Lumumba says the money will cover two, possibly three new buses.
“It marks a beginning of addressing this long-standing problem in our city. where we have seen inefficient routes. where we have seen buses that have not been able to stand the test of time for the ridership and so im excited about being able to respond to this urgent need.”
City leaders say they are in the process of ordering several smaller vehicles for on-demand use.
