Malaco Records celebrates 50 years with a gospel performance in the heart of Jackson where it all started.

WJTV’s Margaret-Ann Carter was at Thalia Mara as some gospel legends took the stage.

Dottie peoples kicked off a gospel celebration to be remembered. Her famous vocals had fans jumping out of their seats dancing and singing along.

When Mississippi Mass Choir star Mosie Burks joined Peoples on stage the room erupted with even louder singing and clapping.

“To be among so many legends is just an awesome feeling and we learn so much from them so our job now is to keep the legacy alive to preserve it because it’s so important to our heritage,” Gospel artist, Tyrone Porter said.

Tyrone Porter is just one of many legendary singers Malaco records has signed. Another voice on that incredible list is Jackson native Harvey Watkins Jr.

“Music period is a blessing but gospel music is something I grew up with it’s something in my heart and that is why I love Malaco they love gospel music and they love the Lord,” Watkins said.

Watkins and Porter say Malaco Records has helped gospel music reach new levels around the world.

“It’s so great and so awesome an experience you know lives have been changed and you know so many great stories behind those who are about to commit suicide and turn on the radio and listen to some of those good traditional quartet songs,” something Porter says only gospel music can do.

The concert was recorded live for anyone who wasn’t able to make it.
