MFC responds to 23 wildfires over the weekend

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) — The Mississippi Forestry Commission responded to 23 wildfires over the weekend.

MFC said the fires burned about 931 acres of land statewide.

Since January MFC Wildland Firefighters have suppressed 426 wildfires that burned 6,167 acres across the state. More than 780 structures have been saved.

March is Wildfire Prevention Month. Crews said to help prevent them, residents can avoid burning on dry, windy days. The wind carries embers long distances, which can start a new spot fire as far away as one-half mile from the burning area.

In addition to fighting wildfires in Mississippi, MFC sent crews to Texas and Oklahoma to help battle the fires there.
