UPDATE: One police officer dead, 6 others injured after shooting in South Carolina


One police officer is dead and six other law enforcement officers are injured after a shooting in Florence, South Carolina.

Authorities in the area say the shooting took place in the Vintage Place neighborhood on the west side of the city. 

City spokesman John Wukela says city police and the sheriff’s office were responding to a shots fired call from a home in the area when shots were fired. 

Florence County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Glen Kirby says the suspect surrendered himself to deputies following a two hour stand-off and after talking to a negotiator. 

CBS News reports three Florence County deputies and three other city officers were wounded after the shooting, with Florence Mayor Stephen Wukela saying some of the officers were in “serious condition.”
