Dogfighting ring uncovered in Wayne County

Pine Belt

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Department is searching for suspects after uncovering a dog-fighting ring on Sunday.

Deputies found eight dogs behind a home off of Lacey Road in Buckatunna. Wayne county sheriff Jody Ashley says when they arrived on the scene the dogs were found in various medical conditions.

“We found a dog pit ring at this location. One pit bull dog was severely injured,” said Ashley. “The [pit bull] would be euthanized, and then we’d go back with a rescue operation earlier today and start rescuing these pit bull dogs that were in bad locations.”

Sheriff Ashley says they have already Randy M. Sumrall on evidence tampering charges.

“He was tampering with evidence. He was trying to destroy some evidence,” said Ashley. “There were some things at this site that trains these dogs; he was trying to destroy that. So he was charged with tampering with evidence.”

Wayne County Sheriff Jody Ashley told WJTV that even though they’ve already made one arrest, they’re still looking for suspects in this case and that this is still an active and open investigation. He says if you have any information at all please to reach out to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department or Metro Crime stoppers.
