PURVIS, Miss.(WHLT) – Purvis High School is the recipient of the 2018 Great Books Giveaway from the Young Adult Library Services Association.
Denise Ladner, Purvis High School Library Media Specialist, applied for the award so the library can expand their non-fiction section.
Each year YALSA provides more the $40,000 in materials to libraries across the nation.
Ladner says this is the second time she’s applied for the award, and Purvis High School is the only school that received the award this year. The other two recipients were public libraries in Virginia and Michigan.
By the end of 2018, Purvis High School’s library will have up to five years worth of donated books and audiobooks by publishers and producers. Nelson says budget cuts have made it difficult to provide certain new books for students, but with the awarded material students will have an abundance of material to choose from.
“Our library at Purvis High School is the hub of learning here. We have classes almost every day in here doing some type of research project. Whether it be on the computers and utilizing our non-fiction books. So it’s just a tremendous help for us.”
As the materials start to roll in, Nelson says they’re just one step closer to helping students achieve their future college and career goals.
In June, Purvis High School will also be recognized by the America Library Association in New Orleans.
