UPD names new Chief of Police

HATTIESBURG, Miss (WJTV) – For the first time in almost 20 years, the University Police Department on Southern Miss’ campus has a brand new Police Chief: Rusty Keyes.

Keyes has been a law enforcement officer for 30 years, working at the Hattiesburg Police Department before joining the UPD in 2006.

Keyes says one thing he’ll be focusing on right away is community based policing on campus.

“I think it’s important for policemen to interact with their community,” explained Keyes. I like to say that the public is the police and the police is the public. We work together, we’re all in this together. We live here together, we shop together, we eat together. And that’s who my constituents are. And I need to make sure that they’re working with me and I’m working with them.”

The UPD’s current Chief of Police, Chief Bob Hopkins, will be retiring on June 30th. Keyes will continue to serve as the Assistant Chief of Police until July 1st, when he’ll take over as the Chief of the UPD.
