JACKSON, Miss (WJTV) – Each year the top players in the state gather at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame to find out who will take home two of the most coveted awards in the state…the C Spire Gillom and Howell trophies.
This year’s finalists included Ole Miss’ Breenin Tyree and Southern Miss’ Cortez Edwards.
However this year’s Howell trophy award winner was Quinndary Weatherspoon.
Weatherspoon is the first Bulldog to win the Howell trophy twice.
He says winning this year means just as much as it did last year.
“It hit me the other night, Saturday night, during senior day,” said Howell. “But just winning this award, just knowing that Bailey Howell, one of the greatest players to ever play at Mississippi State, and for me to come in from Mississippi State and be able to win it, it’s a big accomplishment for me.”
Weatherspoon is averaging 18.5 points and almost 5 rebounds per game this year for Mississippi State. Weathersppon will be back in action on Thursday when MSU takes on the winner of Texas A&M and Vanderbilt in the SEC tournament.
