JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Tougaloo College hosted a special event for young men.
It is called The Young Males of Color Reading Challenge.
The Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color (COSBOCK) is a national education organization that focuses on increasing academic outcomes for boys of color
“Any activity that focuses on the importance of reading and engaging them and specifically with this seminar, they’ll receive books of characters that look like them who have similar experience. So I really do think this activity will really help them to read,” said William Merritt, the Chief Academic Officer with Jackson Public Schools District.
Merritt says this is an opportunity that students have not had.
The coalition partnered with JPS and the Mississippi Action Network for Uplifting Promise to hold this reading challenge.
