Retired National Guardsman remembers days after 9/11

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Sunday, September 11, 2016 marks 15 years since our country came under attack in New York and Washington D.C.

Hundreds of brave men and women came to the rescue, including firefighters, police officers and even the National Guard.

Jackson attorney Toby Gammill was one of those men called to the frontline after that attack.

He worked 12 hour night shifts, assisting the New York Police Department, waiting for another wave of attacks.

They were armed with gas masks in case of chemical warfare.

Even though it happened 15 years ago, Gammill says he thinks of that day all the time.

“We were 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. of making sure police on each corner had two soldiers with them per one police officer, to maintain the perimeter, security; keep people out and get people out that were within the perimeter,” said Gammill.
